"I'M Going To Be Pastor Of A Church"
M. L.Saw The world outside the South for the very first time after his final year in high school, when he took a summer job working in the fields of a Commecticut tobacco farm. Although the work was hard, living in the North gave him, he said, an "exhilarating sense of freedom." When he and his fellow black field hands went into Hartford, they were able to eat in any restaurant, relax in any park, and sit in any seat at a movie theater. On the train black to Atlanta, M. L. reentered the bitter realm of segregation. He had his choice of seats for the first few hundred miles as the train raced across New York and New Jersey, but by dinnertime the train had reached Virginia. When he went to the dining car, a waiter escorted him to the rear table, and M. L. was asked to pull a curtain around him so whites would not have to see a black man eating. "I felt as though a curtain had dropped on my selfhood," he said. But slowly, surely, times were changing. In December 1941, when M. L. was 12, the United States had entered World War II, and late in the summer of 1944, as he returned to Atlanta, the struggle was approaching its climax. Moreover, the war was proving to be a turning point in American racial relations. Defense industries, desperate for labor, offered well paying assembly-line jobs, and more than a million blacks flocked to factories. There they found themselves, ofthen for the first time, working alongside whites. etc.. |
